Born Ysmael Yrastorza Yuzon, younger brother of Yanni Yuzon of Pupil, Born November 22, 1983 (1983-11-22) (age 25). Graduated English Literature at Ateneo de Manila University.
It was way back in 1998 when Yael and Gosh Dilay spotted each other in Ateneo High School and met through the theater club, Teatro Baguntao. Yael Yuzon was the front man of a rock band named White Chapel back then. However, he felt the urge to form a band with Gosh and two other members of the guild. That was when they decided to call the group Sponge, named after R. S. Surtee’s Mr. Sponge’s Sporting Tour. Later however, they learned about a Detroit grunge band already using the name Sponge, so they just simply decided to add “cola,” to give their name more semblance. Soon they started to perform and join in several high school musical competitions. This paved his way to fame and the popularity of the band, as they competed and won several recognitions.
After few years, Yael and Gosh Dilay remained in the lineup while the two other members were replaced by Christopher Cantada and Erwin Armovit. Erwin was the former guitarist of Rampqueen, which is the sister band of Spongecola. Yael’s career started early, though. His popularity being the lead rock vocalist of the band has earned him many credits and awards as well. He and his band mates came up with a self-titled EP in the last quarter of 2003. This contained five original songs namely, “Saturn,” “Cigarette,” “Jeepney,” “Lunes,” and “A Tear.” These extensive songs have exposed Yael’s ability to adjust his vocal range and his skill to shift from mellow to screamo tone without losing its touch. With their self-titled EP, he was able to get more shows, exposures, and concerts from all over the country.
Yael also managed to sing a version of Madonna’s “Crazy for You,” which then became such a popular underground internet hit. The favorable response from the public further led to larger opportunities for Yael and his band mates. The band’s breakthrough in the mainstream was when they signed up for a record distribution under Sony BMG Records Philippines in their first full-length debut album. The band is now currently signed up for Universal Records.
Although Yuzon is now considered as one of the top band singers in the country, he claims that he never forgets to remain humble and contented with his career right now—that’s why he’s still sticking up with Spongecola.
